Gin Dance Company’s production of “Lightning” features four compelling and distinct pieces that explore the depths of human emotion and storytelling through movement.

The title piece, “Lightning”, is a powerful new work which, through the energy and sound of lightning and thunder, Shu-Chen explores this phenomena of nature to create the energy of the movement and delves into the deeper human feelings and emotion felt when lighting strikes. 

Second, we are so excited to have an award winning Vietnamese-American choreographer, Thang Dao set his original work entitled “Cloaked”. The work examines the fragile boundary between concealment and revelation. The work explores the masks we wear to protect ourselves and the longing to be truly seen.

The Third piece, a collaboration through ArtsFairfax with The Fairfax County Poet Laureate, Angelique Palmer. This work is titled “Mirror of the Heart”, an Asian culturally influenced work choreographed by Shu-Chen. This work is inspired by Buddha’s teachings that often describe the heart as a mirror that, when cleared of dust (passions/negativity), reflects truth and kindness. Angelique’s evocative words intertwine beautifully with Shu-Chen’s choreography, creating a vibrant tapestry that resonates with audiences on multiple levels.

Finally, we will close the production with “That’s Mozart” choreographed by Shu-Chen Cuff. You’ll find this work to be a fun, light hearted ode to Mozart’s humor and playfulness.

Adding to the excitement, we are especially excited to have exceptionally talented guest artist, Luke Spring who was featured on Broadway in “A Christmas Story” with additional credits that include Disney’s “Newsies”, Maurice Hines Is Tappin’ Thru Life, Kennedy Center Honors (Tom Hanks Tribute), Tony Awards, Fred and Adele Astaire Awards, and TV appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and SYTYCD just to name a few. Aurora Dance Fest 2026 at Capital One Hall

Thank you for your interest in sharing your work in Gin Dance Company’s Aurora Dance Festival. This year ADF will be at Capital One Hall on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 7:30 pm.

*SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 14, 2025, 11:59 pm EST

*Artists will be notified by December 17, 2025 on their application status. 

Selected participants must be available to do tech and dress rehearsal on the same day of performance day at Capital One Hall on April 11, 2026.

*The Festival does not provide housing and/or transportation.

*Individual artists and collectives are welcome to apply. You do not need to be a formal organization to be considered.

*University dance major students may apply. 

*Duration of group piece (more than dancers) should be no longer than 10 min, and solo/duet should be no longer than 6 min in length. 

*If a work exists only in-progress, please send a rehearsal video of the required length with sufficient supplemental information with which to be fairly considered. World Premiere performances are welcomed and encouraged. If you are applying with a work-in-progress submission and are accepted into the Festival, you will be asked to provide a video of the completed work before final approval.

*An excerpt of a longer work can be accepted.

*Each choreographer/company may submit up to two works. Performers can appear in more than one application. (each application requires a separate application form.)

GDC Presents “Legend of The White Snake and Other Works” at Capital One Hall

  This production features two compelling and distinct pieces that explore the depths of human emotion and storytelling through movement.The first, “Untether”, is a powerful new work by Dutch-American choreographer Christian Denice who delves into the quiet tension between release and resistance. Through looping and emotionally evocative movement, the work captures the internal struggle of wanting to let go of a memory, a person, or a version of oneself – yet feeling tethered by invisible threads that draw us back. As the dancers weave between connection and isolation, their bodies echo the weight of memory and the things we are bound to. The work examines grief, attachment, and the fragile hope that lies in the process of letting go.The second piece marks the return of Legend of The White Snake to Capital One Hall—Gin Dance Company’s acclaimed reimagining of the beloved Chinese folktale. Featuring live musical accompaniment by renowned Chinese dulcimer artist Chao Tian, this vibrant production breathes new life into a story that dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Retold through novels, operas, shadow plays, and film, the tale follows the romance between an ordinary young man and a mysterious, beautiful woman—who is, in fact, a thousand-year-old snake transformed into human form through centuries of Taoist practice. Artistic Director Shu-Chen blends rich Chinese cultural influences with contemporary dance to create a visually stunning and emotionally resonant interpretation of this timeless love story.
